OB & Moug Better Days
James and I met when I was playing a show up in Leeds back in 2019, and really hit it off, with a particular appreciation for each other’s music and our influences. Off the back of that I travelled back up to Leeds for the weekend and we got a load of ideas down, two of them making up the tracks on this release. We’d worked remotely before that, but we knew much more would come from sitting down together and catching a vibe.
The underlying theme of the release is simply the up and down nature of life. When things aren’t okay, it can be a struggle to keep it moving. James and I both find solace in making music, as well as in our friendship, especially when times are tough. “Better Days” is an ode to the good times, as can be heard through the uplifting and organic mixture of sounds we drew for. On the other hand, “Holding On”, has more of a raw and heartfelt feel to it, serving as a reminder that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Sonically, a lot of the elements on both tracks have been played in using hardware, mainly James’s Dave Smith Prophet. We both consider ourselves “musical”, but James’s background lends itself more to playing it in live than mine. I also love sampling, so this has made teaming up really interesting for us.
“Better Days” was wrapped up pretty much as soon as I got back to London (after catching up on much needed sleep), but “Holding On” was resurrected several months down the line, at which point us and Dogger felt they were quite fitting together as a release.
